The island of Murano is close to central Venice and probably the most popular of the islands of Venice, consisting of many smaller islands linked by bridges. Murano is most well-known for its stunning glassworks, many of which are sold throughout Venice.
The Murano glassmakers have revived historic techniques that had almost been forgotten, including the ancient art of enamelled glass. There are also many excellent glass shops and factories around Murano island, where you watch interesting glass-making demonstrations.
Attractions in Murano, nearby central Venice, include the Museo d'Arte Vetrario - a glass museum dedicated to the art and history of glasswork in and around Murano and Venice. The museum contains one of the largest and most important collections of Venetian glass, much of which dates back to Roman times, and there more than 4,000 pieces on display. Other attractions at Murano include the magnificent Veneto-Byzantine Basilica di SS Maria e Donato, which is home to a detailed 12th-century mosaic pavement.
