This neighbourhood of Cannaregio is located in the most northerly area in the region and stretches in a large arc from one of the oldest quarters of Venice in the east to the more modern railway station to the west.
Cannaregio, nearby central Venice, is best known for introducing the word 'ghetto', and Cannaregio contains many quiet streets close the main centre areas. The three major canals were originally created from Cannaregio marshes in medieval times and these historic canals now criss-cross many other smaller waterways.
With a strong Jewish history, Cannaregio is full of interesting memorabilia and attractions, particularly at the Museo Ebraico, which is home to splendid silver Hanukkah lamps and torahs, Passover plates, and lavishly decorated wedding contracts in Hebrew. Other attractions at Cannaregio, nearby Venice, include five synagogues in Cannaregio, three of which have hourly guided tours in both Italian and English. Cannaregio is within easy reach of Venice and well worth a visit when staying in this part of Italy.
